Japanese title: ジャストブリード
Just Breed is one of the last tactical RPGs for the Famicom, released by Enix at the very end of 1992.
The battle system feels a bit like Fire Emblem or Shining Force, but it has its own twist: every fighter acts as part of a group, moving in squads and staying close to the commander. Between battles you can explore towns, where you’ll run into atmospheric—and sometimes unexpected—story scenes.
For its time, it was a genuinely advanced game: fast movement on the B button, expanded audio, a large and readable font with an unusual (for Famicom) use of kanji, and character designs by Yuzo Takada, the creator of the 3×3 Eyes manga.
Package contents
This game came in a very nice-looking box.
Inside you’d find:
1. The game cartridge;
2. Technical documentation;
3. The game manual;
A pretty standard set for Japanese RPGs of that era. The cartridge is the only thing that really stands out, with its unusual size and shape.
Photos
The front of the box features a colorful fantasy illustration, while the back has a detailed description and screenshots from the game.
Another neat detail: the Just Breed cartridge is held together with small metal screws, not plastic clips like most standard Famicom cartridges. That makes it easy to open for cleaning or for a battery replacement.
The manual is done in Enix’s signature pink tones.
Epilogue
Even with a fairly standard set of contents, Just Breed is a pleasant surprise in terms of build quality. The cartridge is made from solid plastic, the shell is screwed together, and it comes apart easily when needed. It’s one of those cases where a familiar “box + cart + manual” feels special thanks to the little details and the overall level of manufacturing.
