Game Boy Advance SP Japanese Limited Editions

It was on the Japanese market that the Game Boy Advance SP consoles first appeared. This is not surprising, as Nintendo originated in Japan.

If you have read the history, you probably know that Nintendo released an exclusive console for the Japanese market – the Game Boy Light. However, with the Game Boy Advance SP, things were different. The AGS-001 model was released in Japan, while the AGS-101 model was not, although it was released in the rest of the world.

Perhaps the most interesting limited editions of the console were released in Japan. Maybe not in terms of design, as that is subjective, but certainly in terms of the bundles.

Game Boy Advance SP Final Fantasy Tactics Advance

The first limited edition of the Game Boy Advance SP was released on the general sales start date, February 14, 2003.

This console was sold in 7-Eleven and Ito-Yokado Group stores.

Model AGS-001. Pearl White color.

The console bundle included: the game, a case, and a console strap.

Starting price: 18,300 yen.

Game Boy Advance SP Boktai Edition

Game Boy Advance SP Boktai Edition

This limited edition was released on July 17, 2003. Model AGS-001.

The console bundle included: a game cartridge (Boktai: The Sun is in your hand), which interestingly had a built-in solar sensor. This sensor was crucial in the game, for example, for charging solar weapons, etc.

In October 2003, a limited edition in gold color appeared on the shelves of Toys “R” US stores.

On November 27, 2003, the GBA SP Gundam Edition was released.

The console bundle included: the game SD Gundam G-Generation Advance.

Game Boy Advance SP Mega Man

Game Boy Advance SP Mega Man

On December 13, 2003, simultaneously with the release of the game Mega Man Battle Network 4, a limited edition of the Game Boy Advance SP was released.

As with Pokémon, two versions of the game were released: Red Sun and Blue Moon. This led to two different packaging versions for this console. The red packaging came with the game Mega Man Battle Network 4 Red Sun, and the blue packaging came with the game Blue Moon. However, the consoles themselves were identical.

The consoles were sold at Toys “R” US stores.

On February 14, 2004, Nintendo released the Famicom Mini series (known as the Classic NES Series in America). Simultaneously with the release of these games, a limited edition Game Boy Advance SP in Famicom colors was released.

On July 15, 2003, promotional materials began to appear in Japan celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Famicom console. Nintendo prepared a huge prize draw, including consoles, T-shirts, and many other prizes.

To participate in this draw, you had to purchase a game that contained an application form and a special sticker. The sticker had to be attached to the application form.

If you were lucky, you could win this console.

From July 1 to August 31, 2004, Nintendo held another contest to celebrate the release of Donkey Kong games for GameCube and Game Boy Advance. As with the 20th anniversary celebration of Famicom, you had to purchase one of the two games. They contained a postcard with a sticker that had to be sent to Nintendo. The winner received a Game Boy Advance SP Donkey Kong console.
