Nintendo Handheld Compatibility (Game Boy–3DS): Region Lock, Language & Backward Compatibility
iQue Compatibility Guide (China): Region Lock, Menu Language & Game/Cartridge Support
iQue is Nintendo’s official brand for Mainland China. If you collect iQue hardware, you quickly run into practical questions: Will an iQue DS cartridge work on a Nintendo DS? Does iQue DSi have an English menu? Can iQue 3DS XL play US/EU games?
This guide covers region lock, menu/system language, and backward compatibility across iQue systems (iQue Player, iQue GBA, iQue DS/DSi, iQue 3DS XL). When relevant, I also mention what changes after softmodding (installing homebrew/CFW).
• iQue GBA hardware: region-free like regular GBA; cartridge language depends on the cart.
• iQue DS family: standard DS games generally run; iQue DS cartridges have extra compatibility quirks (details below).
• iQue DSi / iQue 3DS XL: Chinese-only menu by default; other regions and language options usually require softmodding.
• iQue 3DS XL: strict region lock for most 3DS titles; only specific exceptions work.
The iQue company released eight Nintendo consoles (in order of their release):
1. iQue Player;
2. iQue GBA;
3. iQue GBA SP AGS-001;
4. iQue DS;
5. iQue Micro;
6. iQue GBA SP AGS-101;
7. iQue DSi;
8. iQue 3DS XL.
Below is a per-system breakdown: menu language, region restrictions, and which games / cartridges actually work on each iQue console.
iQue Player (China N64): Language & Game Compatibility
Initially, when Wei Yen took the helm of iQue, he had grand plans. He wanted to obtain the right to distribute Nintendo consoles in China, but also heavily modify them, or even release something entirely their own.
The first project of iQue was a completely redesigned Nintendo 64, which was called the iQue Player.
This console did not have the ability to insert cartridges. Games were distributed digitally and had to be written to a flash cartridge that came with the console.
System Language
The iQue Player only has Chinese language.
Regional Restrictions
The iQue Player has no cartridge slot. Games were distributed digitally (China-only), and written to the included flash cartridge.
Because of that design, region lock works differently than on a normal Nintendo 64: you can’t simply insert a US/Japan N64 cartridge.
Publicly documented homebrew options for the iQue Player are limited. In practice, assume you can only run officially supported content unless you have a known community solution.
Backward Compatibility
None, since the console does not have a cartridge slot.
iQue Game Boy Advance (GBA/SP/Micro): Cartridge Compatibility
Many people think that iQue only released the Game Boy Advance. But that's not true! They released all versions of the GBA:
If you are searching “Do iQue GBA carts work on a regular Game Boy Advance?” or “Can iQue GBA play Nintendo GBA cartridges?” — this section answers that.
1. iQue Game Boy Advance;
2. iQue Game Boy Advance SP AGS-001;
3. iQue Game Boy Advance SP AGS-101;
4. iQue Micro.
iQue planned that all these consoles would work on iQue cartridges, which had a good Chinese translation.
Left: Nintendo cartridge, right: iQue cartridge.
However, iQue was only able to release eight games on cartridges. Another eight were ready but were never released.
System Language
Game Boy Advance consoles did not have a system language. The language depended on the cartridge. iQue cartridges were targeted at the China market, so they were Chinese.
Regional Restrictions
There were no regional restrictions in this family of consoles. iQue Game Boy Advance consoles could run standard Nintendo Game Boy Advance cartridges, and Nintendo GBA consoles could run iQue cartridges.
Backward Compatibility
But with backward compatibility, things are not so simple. Like regular GBA hardware, iQue GBA, iQue GBA SP (AGS-001 / AGS-101) can run old Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges, while iQue Micro can only run GBA cartridges.
The iQue Micro had no backward compatibility and could only run Game Boy Advance cartridges.
iQue DS Compatibility (DS / DS Lite / DSi): Language, Region Checks & Cartridges
iQue also did not ignore the Nintendo DS family, releasing three varieties of this console:
1. iQue DS;
2. iQue DS Lite;
3. iQue DSi.
The iQue DSi XL version was never released.
Looking at the top of the iQue DS Lite and iQue DSi, you wouldn't even know that these are consoles from iQue.
Nintendo released three types of cartridges for the Nintendo DS family: Nintendo DS, Nintendo DS enhanced, and Nintendo DSi exclusive. In turn, iQue only released iQue DS cartridges.
From left to right: Nintendo DS, Nintendo DS enhanced, Nintendo DSi exclusive, and iQue DS.
iQue DSi games could only be purchased in the iQue DSiWare online store.
System Language
On iQue DS and iQue DS Lite, you can change the system language to English (like on Nintendo DS).
On iQue DSi, the menu is Chinese-only by default. If you need English menus or region changes, you typically need softmodding (homebrew/CFW).
Regional Restrictions
On paper, the DS family is mostly region-free — but iQue adds extra checks on some cartridge types. The easiest way to think about it is this compatibility matrix:
• Nintendo DS cartridges: run on iQue DS, iQue DS Lite, and iQue DSi.
• Nintendo DS enhanced (DSi-enhanced) cartridges: run on iQue DS and iQue DS Lite; on iQue DSi they may fail to start.
• Nintendo DSi exclusive cartridges: do not run on iQue DS-family consoles.
• iQue DS cartridges: generally do not run on Nintendo DS / DS Lite, but they do run on Nintendo DSi / DSi XL.
So the safe rule is: treat iQue DS cartridges as DSi-compatible rather than universally DS-compatible, even though the physical format looks like a DS cart.
Backward Compatibility
iQue DS and iQue DS Lite can easily run Game Boy Advance cartridges.
In turn, iQue DSi cannot run them, as it does not have a Game Boy Advance slot. However, it can run iQue DS cartridges without any issues.
iQue 3DS XL Region Lock: What Games Work (and What Doesn’t)
Of the entire Nintendo 3DS console family, iQue only released one version - the iQue 3DS XL.
Compared to regular 3DS models, iQue 3DS XL has unusually limited software distribution, which affects what you can actually play.
First, no cartridges were released for the iQue 3DS XL. Second, there was no official eShop for iQue 3DS XL at launch, so your library options were extremely limited.
When selling the iQue 3DS XL, two games were pre-installed. If you deleted them or the system memory failed, you could lose access to those games.
System Language
The iQue 3DS XL only has Chinese language.
Regional Restrictions
The iQue 3DS XL has strict regional restrictions. As a general rule, most non-China 3DS cartridges will not boot. Region lock can be bypassed after softmodding (homebrew/CFW), but stock consoles are very limited.
However, there are some exceptions.
First, cartridges without regional restrictions also run on this console. For example, Pokemon Ultra Moon runs fine on the iQue 3DS XL.
In addition, the iQue 3DS XL can run some Taiwan-market cartridges — but not all of them.
About Taiwan: retail releases there are mixed — you can encounter Japanese-language cartridges, region-coded variants, and different Chinese language configurations. This is why “Taiwan cartridges work on iQue” is only partially true.
1. 3DS cartridges with Japanese language but restricted to Japanese consoles (Japanese 3DS but with a different region number);
2. 3DS cartridges with traditional Chinese language and restricted to Taiwanese consoles (Taiwan consoles with traditional Chinese language);
3. 3DS cartridges with Taiwanese cover and no language restrictions (for example, some Pokemon cartridges);
4. 3DS cartridges with two languages: traditional Chinese and simplified Chinese.
As a result, the iQue 3DS XL could run cartridges without regional restrictions, and it could run some Taiwan releases with two languages (traditional and simplified Chinese). Cartridges that were strictly Taiwan-only (traditional Chinese + Taiwan region lock) did not work.
So it is more accurate to say: some Taiwan-market cartridges work, depending on region flags and language configuration.
Backward Compatibility
In practice, iQue 3DS XL works reliably with standard Nintendo DS cartridges and iQue DS cartridges. DSi-enhanced and DSi-exclusive titles generally do not work on this console.
