A rarity from last year: a Sony PSP development kit with a foot pedal sold in Japan

In May 2024, two rare consoles appeared at a shop called 家電のケンちゃん — roughly “Ken-chan's Electronics Shop” — in Akihabara, Tokyo.

They were development versions of Sony's handheld, officially called the PSP Development Tool DTP-T1000. This model was intended for developers and used by Sony and partner studios. It almost never appeared on the retail market.

Both units included their boxes and documentation.

One of them also came with a foot pedal. It allowed developers to eject UMD discs with their foot, which was convenient during testing.

The pedal-equipped unit was priced at ¥149,800, while the version without it was ¥145,800. At the time of publication, that was roughly US$965 and US$935 respectively.

Hardware like this is a real prize for collectors and fans of game-industry history. Even in Akihabara, examples like these are exceptionally rare.

Both units sold within a single day.
